How does professional teeth whitening work? Professional whitening uses a stronger concentration of hydrogen or carbamide peroxide than over-the-counter kits. The peroxide breaks down stains that have set into your enamel over years of coffee, wine, tea, and food. At Mapleton Family Dentistry, we offer both in-office whitening (fastest results) and custom take-home trays (gentler, over a couple weeks).

Two Ways to Whiten at Mapleton Family Dentistry

In-Office Whitening

One visit, ~60-90 minutes. Higher-concentration whitening gel applied by our team under controlled conditions. Best when you want visible results fast — think before a wedding, reunion, or job change.

Custom Take-Home Trays

We take an impression of your teeth and make custom-fit trays. You use them at home with our professional whitening gel over a couple weeks. Gentler on sensitivity, and you keep the trays for future touch-ups.

What Whitening Does — and What It Doesn’t

Whitening works well on surface stains from food, drink, and tobacco. It doesn’t change the color of dental work like crowns, veneers, or bonded fillings. If you have cosmetic restorations, we’ll walk you through how whitening will affect the overall look.

Whitening also doesn’t address deep intrinsic discoloration (from tetracycline or trauma). For those cases, veneers or bonding can be a better option.

Is Professional Whitening Safe?

Yes, when done under a dentist’s supervision. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity for a day or two afterward — we’ll advise on this before treatment. If you have significant sensitivity or gum recession, we may recommend a lower concentration or a different approach.

How Long Results Last

Professional whitening typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on your habits. Coffee, wine, tea, and tobacco all cause re-staining over time. Occasional touch-ups (which are easy with custom trays) keep the color where you want it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much whiter will my teeth get?
Most patients see a lift of 2-8 shades on standard shade guides. Your starting color, the type of staining, and which treatment you choose all affect the result. We’ll set realistic expectations before treatment.
Will professional whitening hurt?
Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity for a day or two afterward, especially with the in-office option. This is normal and usually resolves quickly. Custom take-home trays tend to be gentler.
How long do results last?
Typically 1-3 years, depending on your habits. Coffee, wine, tea, and tobacco all cause re-staining. Occasional touch-ups with take-home trays keep the color where you want it.
Will whitening damage my enamel?
Professional whitening under a dentist’s supervision is safe for enamel. Over-the-counter whitening abused at high concentrations can be a different story. That’s one reason professional whitening is worth the extra step.
Does insurance cover teeth whitening?
No. Teeth whitening is considered cosmetic, so it’s not covered by dental insurance. We’ll walk you through the cost of each option before treatment starts.
