Gum Disease Treatment in Mapleton, UT

Bleeding gums and tender pockets don’t heal themselves. Our Dr. Dallin Thueson has advanced training in periodontics and treats gum disease conservatively at every stage — from gentle deep cleanings to more involved therapy when needed.

Gum disease (periodontal disease) affects nearly half of adults over 30, yet it’s one of the most treatable dental conditions when caught early. Left alone, it silently damages the gums and bone that hold your teeth in place — and it’s the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

At Mapleton Family Dentistry, treatment is quiet, methodical, and rooted in preserving your natural teeth. Dr. Thueson trained in advanced periodontics at NYU Langone and in Southern Arizona, and holds an Excellence in Periodontics award from his dental training. Very few Utah County practices have that depth of periodontal expertise in a general dental office.

What Gum Disease Treatment Actually Involves

Gum disease treatment is staged based on how far it’s progressed. The earliest stage — gingivitis — often responds to a thorough professional cleaning and better home care. Once bone loss starts (periodontitis), we treat with a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing that removes hardened plaque from below the gumline and lets the gum tissue reattach to the tooth.

For more advanced cases, Dr. Thueson may recommend targeted antibiotic therapy or referral to a periodontist for surgical care. We handle nearly all cases in-house, at your comfort level, and we work with sedation if the idea of the deep cleaning makes you tense.

Why We Take Gum Disease Seriously at Mapleton Family Dentistry

Gum disease doesn’t just cost you teeth. It’s been linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, stroke risk, and pregnancy problems. Treating it early protects more than your smile — it protects your overall health.

Most people never get flagged for gum disease at a normal cleaning. Our hygienists screen for it at every visit, and if we find pockets deeper than 4 millimeters or bleeding when we probe, we tell you and we treat it — we don’t wait for you to lose bone before we act. Dr. Thueson’s periodontal focus means we catch and treat the earliest signs, before advanced surgery becomes the only option.

Our team explains what we’re seeing, what stage the disease is at, and what your realistic options are before we start treatment. When cost is a concern, we can phase the work.

Gum Disease Frequently Asked Questions

Deep cleanings are done with local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the appointment. Some patients feel mild soreness or sensitivity for a day or two afterward, similar to how gums feel after a regular cleaning. Over-the-counter pain relievers handle it for most patients. If you’re anxious, we offer sedation.

The most common signs are gums that bleed when you brush or floss, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, gums that pull away from the teeth (recession), teeth that feel loose or that have shifted, and a change in how your bite feels. Many people have gum disease without symptoms until it’s advanced, which is why regular checkups matter.

Yes, but only at the earliest stage. Gingivitis (the earliest stage) is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and consistent home care. Once bone loss has started (periodontitis), we can stop the damage and control the disease but not reverse the bone loss. That’s why early treatment is so important.

Most PPO plans cover a portion of scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) because it’s considered necessary care. We work with most PPO plans, and we’ll review your specific coverage with you before treatment starts. If a plan doesn’t fully cover treatment, we can phase it to fit your budget.

Untreated gum disease progresses. The gums pull away from the teeth, bone around the teeth erodes, and eventually teeth become loose or fall out. It’s the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Untreated periodontal disease is also linked to worse control of diabetes, higher risk of heart disease, and pregnancy complications. Treating it early is faster, cheaper, and better for your whole body than waiting.
